The great outdoor richness of Placer County includes Tahoe National Forest, springtime wildflower walks, star-gazing parties, Big Trees redwood grove, bird sanctuaries, and an abundance of winter activities. Its towns and cities provide richness without rush.

Take to the water! Morning Star Lake, also known as Big Reservoir, is a small privately owed lake near Foresthill featuring boating, swimming, camping and fishing. (530) 367-2129. Boca Reservoir, east of Truckee, offers fishing, boating and camping. At Donner Lake you’ll find good visibility diving plus boating, fishing and camping. 800-444-7275. French Meadows Reservoir is in a remote basin surrounded by forest not far from Forestville. All the usual activities including picnicking and mountain biking in a peaceful setting. Call (530) 367-3558. Hell Hole Reservoir is a rugged and remote location for fishermen. In the El Dorado National Forest, it lies at the foot of the Granite Chief Wilderness. Season is mid-June through October. These are just a few of the many enjoyable lakes scattered throughout scenic Placer County.

Hikers will find many challenging trails in Placer County, including Canyon Creek trail in the Cool area and Applegate trail to upper Clementine Lake. An abundance of hiking trails in the American Canyon off the middle fork of the American River provide an excellent combination of outdoor exercise and beautiful locations. The Rivers of Placer County - whether you want to go shooting down white water rapids or stand in a quiet eddy panning for gold, the county’s rivers are one of its great attractions. Take a one or two day river rafting wilderness trip through a classic forested canyon or ride your raft between granite canyon walls. As its name implies Placer County is famous for its still available placer gold deposits.

If you prefer a more urban environment, visit Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln, Auburn, Colfax or Tahoe City to enjoy the many features these places have to offer.

Racing fan? The All American Speedway at the Placer County Fairgrounds in Roseville features 30 nights each year of roaring NASCAR action. Start your engines! For more information call the track office at (916) 786-2025.

Golfer? At the Black Oak Golf Course on Black Oak Rd, minutes from Auburn, you can enjoy the cool shade offered by a forest of Black Oaks on an incredibly lush, green golf course. Onsite amenities include a clubhouse with bar and casual restaurant, golf shop, and carts. (530) 878-1900. Rodeo anyone? Cowboy up and take in the Auburn Rodeo at the Gold Country Fairgrounds in late April. This 75-year-old Auburn tradition features barrel racing, bull riding, steer wrestling, bronc riding and roping. Their phone number is (530) 889-BUCK (889-2825).

Get classical. Explore the music at the Auburn Symphony concerts. Over two decades this vital organization has grown to its current status as one of the best community orchestras in the nation, featuring outstanding guest artists and conductors. For more information call (530) 823-6683.

A taste of wine? Every three months the Placer Hills Winery Tour takes visitors to a selection of local wineries for samples of vintages, many of which can only be found at the source.
